Crain's Detroit Business 2011 Cool Places to Work

Cool Places to Work, as judged by Crain's and the American Society of Employers, recognizes companies and nonprofits that take talent attraction and retention seriously. These organizations acknowledge the importance their workers play in the success of their business and take actions to help those workers thrive.

As some workers pointed out in their nominating forms, this means more than having a video game console and a few couches in a corner of the office. It means demonstrating a commitment to employees' future success through advancement and training opportunities. It means keeping them in the loop on the organization's strategy and direction.

Nominated organizations were asked to complete a survey conducted by ASE. Out of 378 nominated organizations, nearly 100 completed the survey, of which 48 were selected as winners.

The survey covered six weighted categories: work-life initiatives, talent management, communication, total rewards, work environment, and recruitment and employment activities. ASE applied scores to each category and derived a final ranking from those category scores.

Crain's Detroit Business 2009 Best-Managed Nonprofits

United Way for Southeastern Michigan has been selected as one of the 2009 Best-Managed Nonprofits; from Crain's Detroit Business. This is a huge honor for us. In a year marked by an exceedingly tough economy, our organization has been faced with meeting increased community need with shrinking financial resources.

Crain's Detroit Business evaluated our business model for 2-1-1 and 2-1-1 On the Go! programming. The selection of Finalists was based on a variety of criteria. Among them: finding ways to do more with less, collaborative efforts and cost-sharing strategies, and modifications in programming that has resulted in the organization being better-able to meet the needs of its service recipients. We excelled in all categories — and the competition was extremely competitive.

In addition to us, other Finalists include: ArtServe Michigan, GreenPath Debt Solutions and The Michigan Humane Society. Adult Well-Being Services was named Runner-Up and Detroit Public Television (WTVS Channel 56) was named Winner.

To be named by Crain's as a Best-Managed Nonprofit is a distinguished recognition. Everyone associated with United Way for Southeastern Michigan — Volunteers, Donors, Advocates and United Way Staff Members — played an integral role in attaining this level of success and it is because of their hard work and dedication that we received this important and highly-coveted recognition.
